(AsiaGameHub) – The NFL’s push into global markets is becoming a central pillar of the league’s brand. Team owners voted this week to raise the cap on overseas games to as many as 10 per season starting in 2027, surpassing the current limit of eight. This decision signals the league’s growing trust in foreign markets and its readiness to adjust to changing conditions.
Teams Can No Longer Protect Home Matchups
This decision builds on the growing trend of international games, with the 2026 season already set to feature nine matches abroad: eight organized by the league and a separate game in London linked to the Jacksonville Jaguars’ agreement with Wembley Stadium. Under the existing collective bargaining agreement, the NFL required approval from the players’ union.
However, thanks to the new measure, the league will have a more extensive global schedule, potentially evolving into a weekly international showcase. Alongside the increase in the number of games, owners also approved a change that eliminates the rule allowing franchises to protect two specific home games from being moved overseas. Previously, teams could select two games to remain at their home stadiums.
While expanding the number of overseas games offers the league greater flexibility, not every team may welcome the shift, particularly those concerned about losing ticket revenue and local fan engagement. Travel logistics remain a major issue, especially regarding games in Asia. Long-haul flights and the necessary recovery time could test players and potentially lower the standard of play.
2026 Is Shaping Up to Be an Exciting Year for the NFL
The NFL’s 2026 schedule offers a glimpse into the future. Games will be held in seven countries on four continents, including first-time stops in Melbourne, Australia, and Paris, France. Other host cities include London, Madrid, Munich, Rio de Janeiro, and Mexico City. The season will otherwise begin as usual, with a Wednesday kickoff on September 9, moved forward to accommodate the league’s first international game.
Amazon Prime and Netflix will broadcast a series of games over the season, including holiday matchups on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanksgiving week will feature five games, including a rare Wednesday night matchup, while Christmas Day will again include a triple-header.
The 2026 season will conclude with Super Bowl 61 on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. It will also be the first time the championship falls on Valentine’s Day. For now, a Super Bowl played overseas remains unlikely. However, it is now clear that international games are no longer occasional highlights but a regular part of the NFL’s repertoire.
